Composite creatures have long gripped the human imagination, from the “lion-man” of the Hohlenstein-Stadel, and the multi-armed gods of the Vedic tradition, to the face-hugger in Alien. Cognitive and cultural evolution suggest that hybridity of forms may be crucial for the transmission of both religion and horror. In this talk, philosopher Stephen Asma will employ affective neuroscience and cultural epidemiology to understand the creation and transmission of monsters and gods.
